The United Nation s Millennium Development Goals

INTRODUCTION This year, 2015, marks the deadline of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG) with the final objective of extinguishing all extreme forms of poverty in the world. This consists of eight goals set by the UN, which include the promotion of gender equality and human rights, universal primary education, eradication of hunger, and others. One particular goal of the UK’s Millennium Development, goal number six, is the combat of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria in all countries. There are many countries that have made significant progress in the combat of disease; Nigeria is no exception. Therefore; Nigeria has the most new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in all the world despite the fact that three percent of the adult po pulation has HIV (). The main challenge for Nigeria is its size. With a large population and geographic size, it is extremely difficult to relay information to educate about the proper use of contraceptives. Much of the country is without devices such as television or cellular phones that can easily broadcast information to the masses. Instead, Nigeria has to find other ways to educate their population on the use of contraceptives. Another major disease affecting Nigeria is malaria. This is mainly distributed by mosquitoes, and in many cases causes death. The most influential cause of malaria is the climate of Nigeria and Africa in general. According to ________________; the habitat that is provided in rural Nigeria is optimal for the reproduction of mosquitoes and their survival. Nigeria’s climate is ruled by the wet and dry seasons. Vegetation is prevalent. Rains create shallow ponds where the most dominant species of mosquito in the region thrive; while vegetatio n also is the breeding habitat for the next populous species. This creates Nigeria’s heightened risk of malaria infection. Other issues that complicate Nigeria in regards to malaria is the proper education on the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs).
