Writing News J. Rowling Revealed to Be the Author of Cuckoos Calling

As it was revealed the previous week, the true author of the detective novel Cuckoo’s Calling released back in April is not a Robert Galbraith, but the world-famous British novelist Joanne Rowling, the author of best-selling Harry Potter series. It is hard to say now why it has turned out like this: was this revelation an accident or a clever marketing move, or a result of misunderstanding between the author and the publishing house of LittleBrown Company. According to Joanne Rowling, to reveal her identity as the author of this book was certainly not her intention – at least, not so soon. To call it a marketing ploy would also be an overstatement – Rowling’s name has long ago turned into an advertisement enough for her books to be bought irrespectively of how they are delivered to the readers. One can only wonder why Ms. Rowling decided to publish her new novel under a pseudonym and why her identity has been revealed. The most likely explanation of this news is that she decided to see how her new book would sell without an advertisement of this kind. The result was rather pathetic: since its release the Cuckoo’s Calling has sold only about 500 copies in hardcover in the US. The publishing house was probably not very happy about this – and tried to get the information about the author to the public, which quickly changed the situation – after the news broke the book went to press four times and had as much as 390,000 copies in the United States, and the Cuckoo’s Calling is conspicuously displayed by all the book stores. Or it could all have been an accident or a direct decision of the author – the official version is that the source of the leak was Rowling’s London law firm. Ms. Rowling herself, however, states that she planned to write and publish more than one novel under the alias of Robert Galbraith and certainly wasn’t happy when her identity has been revealed so early. She will most likely go through with this plan – the next Galbraith’s novel is already finished and will probably be published next year. Joanne Rowling is famous for her Harry Potter series – a cycle of novels about the eponymous young wizard living in contemporary England which conceals behind its mundane faà §ade the world of magic, wonder and intrigue. It’s a peculiar combination of genres: school story, bildungsroman and fantasy – has made the book insanely popular both among children (to whom the series has been initially addressed) and grown-ups. Even now it remains one of the most best-selling books in contemporary Great Britain and a notable phenomenon of modern world literature.

The United Nation s Millennium Development Goals

INTRODUCTION This year, 2015, marks the deadline of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG) with the final objective of extinguishing all extreme forms of poverty in the world. This consists of eight goals set by the UN, which include the promotion of gender equality and human rights, universal primary education, eradication of hunger, and others. One particular goal of the UK’s Millennium Development, goal number six, is the combat of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria in all countries. There are many countries that have made significant progress in the combat of disease; Nigeria is no exception. This is due to Nigeria exponentially increasing there treatment and counseling facilities for HIV/AIDS, along with the†¦show more content†¦Their population is over 180 million people, making it the most populous country in all of Africa. Therefore; Nigeria has the most new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in all the world despite the fact that three percent of the adult po pulation has HIV (). The main challenge for Nigeria is its size. With a large population and geographic size, it is extremely difficult to relay information to educate about the proper use of contraceptives. Much of the country is without devices such as television or cellular phones that can easily broadcast information to the masses. Instead, Nigeria has to find other ways to educate their population on the use of contraceptives. Another major disease affecting Nigeria is malaria. This is mainly distributed by mosquitoes, and in many cases causes death. The most influential cause of malaria is the climate of Nigeria and Africa in general. According to ________________; the habitat that is provided in rural Nigeria is optimal for the reproduction of mosquitoes and their survival. Nigeria’s climate is ruled by the wet and dry seasons. Vegetation is prevalent. Rains create shallow ponds where the most dominant species of mosquito in the region thrive; while vegetatio n also is the breeding habitat for the next populous species. This creates Nigeria’s heightened risk of malaria infection. Other issues that complicate Nigeria in regards to malaria is the proper education on the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). It is reported that many

American General Corporation Essays - Subprime Mortgage Crisis

American General Corporation At American General Corporation we started from looking at company's market standing from potential investors point of view. First we take a look at the companies profile. American General Corporation is a diversified financial services organization, provides retirement services, life insurance, and consumer loans. The company offers retail financial programs through fifteen thousand merchants. American General Corp. operates in 41 states. Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. Well, first we find out that American General Corporation is a blue chip, multibillion dollar company. This tells us right from the beginning that this financial giant is really worth looking at as a potential candidates to be added in our stock portfolio. Considering that this is a financial company dealing with investments, pension funds and life insurance we have to be very careful because these industries are most sensible to overall economy changes, and we know that at this point US economy is going through the period when recession is most expected. To get a better understanding of how this might affect companies risk we have to know how diversified companies investments are. For that we have to evaluate companies performance compare to market performance. ( for this purpose we use chart on returns for American General Corporation to S&P 500 ). As we can see from the chart behavior of the company is almost identical to the behavior of the market, this observation becomes more obvious when we take a look at company's beta which is .95. Well this is not such a great sign because as I already mentioned recession is expected., and as we know with recession overall market returns go down this is knowing the relationship between market and AGC we can predict that American General Corp. performance will decrease as well. The question is how deep will the market fall, and how long the recession would last, of course, if the recession will occur. There were no recent revelation, as far as, companies financial structure is concern, well, may be the only exception is a slight change in companies management structure which so far did not make any significant impact on companies market value, so the only major aspect in evaluating of how risky the company is how correlated it is with the market. Of course there are other things to be considered. There are couple of good signs that should lower the risk of AGC. For instance, the decrease in the charge off and delinquency ratios compared to prior periods reflect the positive impact of the company's credit quality improvement program, which included an increase in thee proportion of real estate secured loans and higher underwriting standards. The decrease in the allowance reflects the improvement in charge-off experience, partially offset by an increase in the allowance to support the growth in receivables. Also, company's operating expenses as a percentage of average finance receivables decreased to 5.8% for thee first six month of 1998 from 5.98% for the same period of 1997, and to 5.73% from 5.99% for the same comparable second quarter periods, due to the increase in average finance receivables, which more than offset the increase in operating expenses. Company rapidly grows in value. A decrease in interest rates and resulting increases in bond value in second quarter 1998 caused a $555 increase in the fair value adjustment to fixed maturity securities and related $335 million positive adjustment to shareholders' equity from December 31, 1997. So, the interest rate would be a very important fact to consider in evaluating this company. According to the latest news Federal Reserve has no intention to decrease interest rate any further, there is actually a great possibility of increasing it in defensive move against coming recession. Having such prediction for the future and keeping in mind how greatly American General Corp. influenced by the interest rate, AGC becomes more of a risky investment. The company is very careful with it's investments. AGS decreases its investments into the below investment grade securities ( have credit rating below BBB- ) from 5% at June 31 of 1998 to 4% at December 31 of 1997%. The company invests in below investment securities to enhance the overall yield of the portfolio. Investment income from below investment grade securities was $148 million for the six months ended June 30, 1998. This tells us that this company is not looking for the quick profit, so it does not through its money around passing on opportunities for greater rate of return on equity for stability and safety. For some investors this might

Congree and Foreign Powers essays

Congree and Foreign Powers essays Congress has important powers in the areas of foreign policy and national defense. Chief among these are the power to declare war, to create and maintain an army and navy, to make rules governing land and naval forces, such as the draft and registering for selective service, and to regulate foreign commerce. Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution gives the President certain powers concerning foreign affairs. Two such powers are the power to appoint diplomatic positions, like ambassadors, and the power to make treaties. However, the Senate has a unique check on the President's power concerning these foreign affairs. The Constitution gives the Senate the power of "advice and consent" on all treaties. The President may make treaties with foreign governments, but a two-thirds vote of the Senate must ratify them. The Senate must also confirm presidential appointments to diplomatic posts. This power was intended to give the Senate an opportunity to screen applicants for foreign- policy positions and thus help determine foreign policy. Usually the Senate is willing to accept the persons the President appoints to diplomatic posts. I think that the power Congress has over foreign policy to check the President in times of a foreign policy crisis is insufficient. For example, during the Persian Gulf War, Bush had used his authority as commander in chief to build up American forces in the Persian Gulf without asking for congressional approval. Congress offered little resistance and had little to say because many lawmakers were busy running for reelection. Many members feared that challenging the President's actions would be a huge political risk. If Bush chose war and was successful, lawmakers who opposed the President would become unpopular. These actions taken by Congress demonstrates how insufficient they really are. Congress is lazy and slow when it comes to dealing with its responsibilities. At the time, they were more co...

Case study of family involvement in a school or childcare center Essay

Case study of family involvement in a school or childcare center - Essay Example Despite of several remarks about Dev’s performance in the school diary from the class teacher Miss Melina, there was no sign of any response from Dev’s parent. Dev’s parent had always been in a row which is intolerable for him. Most of the time, Dev runs away from home to a lonely place to avoid his parents piercing quarreling sound. He hates the masculinity of his father torturing his mother whom he loves the most in this world. Dev’s teachers are also not aware that how the boy got to such a critical stage. Mostly, he remains in despair, fearful to the authority and unable to cope with his friend’s reaction. He is lacking confidence day by day. Resultantly, Dev is not even able to do his homework properly; along with that, he is ashamed of presenting his degrading handwriting to anyone. Besides their disparities, Dev’s parents are worried about Dev’s increasing critical personality. As they were noticing Dev’s declining mental condition, which resulted in worst annual assessment of Dev in the 3rd standard. The issue came to the focus of the administration when Dev’s parents reported the school administration. When asked, they blame for the carelessness of teachers and administration. Now we discuss the case of inferior complexion in Dev in a categorical pattern. 1. Background Information At the age of seven, children are usually preparing themselves towards facing the situations around them; and try to be more responsible. In Dev’s case, he is going through an immense psychological torment which nobody is aware of. Being a boy he thinks of shaping himself as his masculine father and thinks to save his mother from pain she is facing. Dev is embarrassed with his mother, for his incapability to rescue her and he has no guts to tell his father not to be so barbarous. All his feelings are unexpressed; they are blocked inside his mind like the air in a soccer ball. So far in his life, Dev has nev er been close to his parents, and has not felt affectionate ever, which are the most important factor for a child to develop both physically and mentally. Dev felt himself as a deprived child, with no one to support him in his studies. His psychological pain has now started showing up symptoms in his physical health too. Dev’s psychic father’s inherited behaviors, from his grandfather have also come to Dev hereditarily in form of intolerable weakening of his mind, which resulted as an inferiority complexion. It is usually said, 70% of education of a child is accomplished from their parents and 30% at the school whereas in case of Dev, it is null at home. And in the other hand, has an adverse affect of it in school too. Other than Home and school, society and environment also play key role in development of a child’s personality. As learned from Dev’s neighbor Mr Amit Singh, due to the non-social and inhuman nature of Dev’s father their family is is olated in the society, as a result Dev never got chance to socialize in public, e.g. in parties and ceremonies etc. So far he has confined himself at his house only. He lived a very critical and isolated life. Every one has shadow side of which he is more or less ashamed. When it goes up to extreme, and if he is confined with idea, that he is the only victim of this kind than it becomes a serious problem. (Douglas) 2. Description of the Presenting Problem Now we discuss about Dev’s present problem which is most crucial and difficult for him to overcome. Normally children are playful. They remain happy even with a small piece of

Crime after crime Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Crime after crime - Essay Example 106-109). She is just but an ordinary woman who got roped in by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was denied her right to a fair trial, and was put behind bars as a result of flaws within criminal justice system and prosecutions. The film deciphers an intersectional Deborah, with her multiple identities and their disadvantages (Intersectionality: A Tool for Gender and Economic Justice, 2004, pp. 1-2). When she was finally released after her case was reopened, she had already lost precious twenty years of her life, whereas had the legal system been just, she would have had to spend only six years in jail. The misunderstandings and misconceptions that clouded her case finally got public after the release of this documentary feature film. The film had not only invoked protests and discontent all across USA, but has also bagged a number of prestigious awards at Spokane, Milan and Berkshire International Film Festival, National Board of Review, Atlanta and Rochester Film Fes tivals, and Golden Gate Award. Deborah Paeglar, the protagonist of Yoav Potash’s Crime After Crime, was a regular normal teenager till she met Oliver Wilson. Teenager Debbie bumped into him and instantly got attracted. In spite of being a teenage mother already having a daughter, she entered into a relationship with Oliver and even bore a baby, a daughter again. However, soon things took a different turn. Peace, harmony and love soon ended in her new life with Oliver. She came to know that Oliver was a pimp. When she was asked for the same, she refused. In return she received severe beatings with a bullwhip at a tender age of 15. Year after year Oliver made her work as a prostitute. At the same time she was subjected to fierce domestic violence. Mentally and physically, she became a shattered person. Her tolerance and patience came to an end when Oliver molested her six- year old daughter. She tried to flee with her two daughters but she was unable to do so. She got beatings on a regular basis. Things got even worse when Oliver got involved into a firearm case and had to spend a night in jail. This made Deborah’s mother much worried for her daughter’s safety. She planned to seek help from some local gang members in order to teach Oliver a lesson. Her motif was to reconcile the differences between Deborah and Oliver. But in the brawl, the two gang members ended up murdering Oliver. Due to this Deborah found herself facing a row of criminal charges. In the meantime she had come across a life- insurance policy. This further worsened her strand. Series of trials and prosecutions went on and she was finally convicted in 1983. She fought her legal battle with the help of two pro- bono attorneys, Nadia Costa and Joshua Safran, and was finally set free. Deborah Peaglar, the African- American woman, had to face the pains rewarded by the toughest anticrime legislation, the Californian law. Women, like men, were treated harshly and were given equal p unishments as men. They were tied in chains, put in boot camps and had to face all types of physical violence (Aday, 2003, pp. 125-127). They were given little chance to present petitions or appeal for defense. Thus fighting legal battles become more and more difficult for battered women like Deborah. Also, her not being ‘white’ further delayed the legal proceedings. Often the prisoners are identified on basis of their â€Å"sex, race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, class, age and ability†
